Wellness is a huge trend right now, and a healthy immune system is a big part of that. How does CBD and the immune system work together? Read on!

Bringing Balance To The Immune System

Before we can talk about CBD and the immune system, let’s talk about the immune system. Our bodies have a wonderful mechanism of cells and organs that work together to fight infections, viruses and other threats. The immune system also helps keep us healthy by eliminating cells that are not functioning properly. The endocannabinoid system is a factor in the function of a healthy immune system, although it is not yet fully understood. The endocannabinoid system helps the body maintain homeostasis (balance) between the various systems in the body. Research has shown that CBD and other cannabinoidal compounds work in concert, and have anti-inflammatory properties , as well as acting as an immunomodulator, and an immunosuppressant. Basically that means that CBD suppresses the function of the body’s immune system, and maintains its activity when underperforming.

This is still a new and exciting field of research, and there is still much left to be done, but here is what the research to date has shown:

CBD can prohibit rapid cell growth (proliferation)

CBD can promote apoptosis, (cellular death)

CBD can suppress T-cell production

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that isolate infected areas and aids in the prevention of the spread of toxins.

CBD’s Anti-Inflammatory Goodness

CBD can modulate or suppress the secretion and function of cytokines. Cytokines are groups of proteins secreted by specific cells in the immune system. They serve as a molecular signal to regulate inflammation, immunity, and white blood cell production. This is a particularly fascinating area of research, as it relates to the current situation regarding the pandemic. Research in this area is also in early stages, so it would be premature to attempt to draw conclusions.

Recent research strongly supports the concept that CBD is immunosuppressive. Studies also indicate that CBD is immune-modulating, which means that it can bring an immune system back into balance when over or under performing.  A clear indicator here is that the difference between “immune-modulation,” and “immune-boosting” characteristics is not yet well understood. This indicates the need for additional research into CBD on the immune system.

Cause For Optimism, Yes!  Still More To Learn.

There is still an enormous amount of research to be done regarding CBD and the immune system. The information that has been discovered indicates that CBD has great potential as an effective natural therapy particularly in regard to autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s Disease.  Of course, consulting a physician before beginning CBD or any other supplemental regimen is essential and highly recommended.
